Yésenia Chapilliquén, a 24-year-old community cartographer, returns to her drought-stricken village in northern Peru for her grandmother's funeral and finds the family's ancestral pasture enclosed by a sugar plantation owned by a company tied to a disgraced religious society. To save the land before bulldozers erase the old boundaries, she must rebuild the map that lived inside her grandmother's head — tree by tree, canal by canal, story by story — while a hacienda lawyer who has crushed her people for decades prepares his final move.
